Canada's role

Through government involvement, the work of Canadian non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and the individual support and contributions of Canadians, Canada has developed a positive reputation in the global community. Like many other developed nations, Canada provides assistance to the developing world in the form of goods, services, transfer of knowledge and expertise, and financial assistance.

At the federal level, development assistance is controlled through the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). CIDA is responsible for administering 80 per cent of Canada's aid budget.

About the Canadian International Development Agency

As Canada's lead agency for development assistance, CIDA exists to support sustainable development in developing countries in order to reduce poverty and contribute to a more safe, equitable and prosperous world.

CIDA's development priorities

Since the 2005 release of Canada's International Policy Statement, Canada's development assistance has been focussed on five main areas:

Gender equality is a cross-cutting theme that is addressed in each area. These priorities help Canada better contribute to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.

Canada's development partner countries

In order to increase the impact of Canadian foreign aid, CIDA focusses its funding on 25 development partner countries.  However, there are many countries that are eligible for Canadian assistance. Some of these countries will only receive funding in an emergency situation.

CIDA's projects

CIDA funds a number of projects around the world. Some of these projects are designed by CIDA and executed by other agencies. Other projects are designed by agencies (Canadian NGOs) that apply for funding from CIDA to support the project. View some examples of CIDA funded development projects by exploring the list of countries that are eligible for Canadian assistance.
