Learning beyond the classroom
RUAWARE?-spread the word, not HIV will be held on November 5, 2008 at the HJA Brown Education Centre. This annual half-day workshop is specifically designed for youth to promote leadership and create awareness about HIV and AIDS. R U AWARE? workshop activities.
Chart Your Course - Explore Your Future Direction, a 2008-09 course guide for Peel secondary schools, lists and describes all of the courses each secondary school offers. Included is information on regional and specialized programs, night school classes and board and ministry policies related to secondary education.
Co-operative Education is a planned learning experience in the community for secondary school students.
Peel offers dual credit programs at Sheridan College. Students can learn two programs in the trades and earn one or more secondary school credits while they earn college credits. See the course descriptions for the COTT/TTOP programs and application package for more information or talk to your school guidance counsellor.
Get on the skills fast-track. OYAP (Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program) helps you get a head start on a career in the skilled trades. You can become a registered apprentice while still in secondary school by enrolling in co-operative education and working in a trade placement.
Co-operative education allows students to learn about career choices, gain valuable work experience and earn credits toward graduation. Registration begins in April. Students must register at their day school.
The Peel District School Board’s Student Model United Nations is a hands-on learning experience that offers approximately 250 secondary students a chance to be a diplomat for a day. During this valuable learning experience, students represent different UN member nations and tackle tough international development and human rights issues in a simulated general assembly.
Youth Driver Education:
You want to drive but you want to learn to do it right. We offer in-class instruction year round at most Peel board schools. Upon successful completion of the Driver Education Program students qualify for insurance discounts as
well as a reduction in the waiting time for their G1 Road Test.

The Triangle Conference is an online discussion group where LGBTQ students can interact anonymously with their peers and discuss common experiences and concerns. The Peel board has created this conference to help make the learning environment safe and respectful for all students. Information, guidelines and an electronic application form are available on the conference site.
UNICEF Canada's web site, give it up 4 Kids - Challenge yourself, Change the world, has been developed for senior elementary and secondary students (ages 13 to 18) in Canada as a tool to enhance awareness and increase fundraising support for the world's most under-served children. The site also provides various interactive tools.
