You too can be a Tutor in the Classroom

 

Are you are currently enrolled in an Ontario college or university? Do you have ideas, talents and passion? A vision for how things should be done and a desire to plan for the future? In fact, you may have already begun to plan for a career after university or college.

You may also have already done some on-the-job training through a co-op work placement. But do you have enough experience to give you more career options when you finally get your hard-earned degree or diploma?

If you're ready to invest your skills and abilities, the Peel District School Board would like to hear from you! We're looking for Tutors who want to make a difference, are eager to learn something new and are ready for a challenge.

What is the Tutors in the Classroom program?
Tutors in the Classroom offers students, like you, the opportunity to discover what it's like to work in a school. You'll work with education leaders in one of Canada's largest school systems and gain an understanding of the important role educators play in the life of a student. You'll gain confidence as you take on more responsibility. And, you'll be paid as you acquire these new skills.

Tutors in the Classroom aims to help students in Peel elementary schools, in Kindergarten to Grade 6, boost their math, science, technology and literacy skills. The program is funded jointly by Ontario's Ministry of Education and the Peel District School Board.

Who can be a Tutor?
To become a Tutor, you must be currently enrolled and attending an Ontario college or university. Preference will be given to students in mathematics, science, applied science or technology programs, or students who demonstrate a great aptitude within one of these areas.

What qualifications do you need?
We're looking for Tutors with the following skills and qualities:
• experience or interest in working with children
• willingness to work with students with different capabilities
• ability to incorporate real life experiences when helping students learn
• creative use of models, pictures and graphs to support student learning
• knowledge of computer software and the internet
• some familiarity with computer instruction
• ability to work with students with different cultural and language backgrounds

What will the Tutors do?
As a Tutor, you'll help strengthen students' skills in math, science and technology by working one-on-one or with small groups. You will:
• support student learning through activities; such as, math and geometry applications
• help students develop research skills and learn how to use technology, e.g. the internet
• use technology to enhance and support literacy and numeracy skills
• assist students with special projects; such as, mapping the community
• help students understand their teacher's instructions and answer questions
• track student progress and keep the teacher informed
• help students recognize their own strengths and weaknesses and help them build good work habits
• learn about the school schedule and routines
Where are the Tutors needed?
We need Tutors in elementary schools in the municipalities of Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga.

How much time is involved?
Tutors will work up to 200 hours (approximately 10 hours per week) during the school year from September to June. Schools offer a flexible work environment - the work schedule is based on the Tutor's availability.

What are the benefits of being a Tutor?
As a Tutor, you will:
• gain a greater appreciation and understanding of the teaching profession
• strengthen your communication skills
• learn to apply your own abilities to help students succeed
• develop personal relationships with students by working closely with them
• learn new skills including programming, curriculum expectations, planning timetables and techniques for handling classroom challenges
• earn $10.25 an hour

Deadline date for application for the 2011-12 school year: April 11, 2012

Your covering letter should outline why you would like to become a Tutor, your experience or interest in working with children, an overview of the program you're currently enrolled in and indicate where you would like to work (i.e. Brampton, Caledon or Mississauga).

Your covering letter and resume will be sent to a Tutor Representative for your area. You will be asked to attend an interview with the Principal and teachers at the school. You should expect to receive a phone call within two weeks of applying for the job. Tutors who are hired will be required to provide an original Criminal Record Check (issued within the last 6 months) and an External Applicant Disclosure Form.
